Words cannot unfold neatly in a way that can aptly convey the love I have for my sisters.
Deep and abiding.
Wild and of the Earth, coiled and tight, yet so big I can sometimes hardly contain it in my chest.
I cherish them.
We are as different as we are alike.
I am so fortunate that their blood runs through my veins.
My middle sister, Hannah, is a poet in so many ways. Watching her become a mother has been amazing. She has an organic and innate motherly sense that stuns me and watching her with my nephew has been one of the greatest joys of my life. It is because of this that I wanted to start this series.
I want the World to hear her voice.
Her journey has been nothing but honest and raw and beautiful.
Hannah and I have often talked about the fact that many women seem to cling to this notion of perfect happiness when it comes to motherhood - this idea that it will always be good, and that as mothers, you will always be happy with your children or your significant other and want for nothing more.
But, here's the truth about all relationships -
"Of course I’ll hurt you. Of course you’ll hurt me. Of course we will hurt each other. But this is the very condition of existence. To become spring, means accepting the risk of winter. To become presence, means accepting the risk of absence."
- The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
We want to open an honest, supportive, real, and non-judgmental conversation about motherhood. I am not an expert. I am an outside observer of this particular realm and hence I rely on my sister for expertise on this topic. She will be sharing regularly on Ruby & Perry about mammahood.
The Mamma Anthologies will include -
Love Notes to Little Ones (or Grown Ones)
Journeys of Mammahood
Wisdom of Mammhood
This space is about building community and loving each other through this beautiful, messy life. I'd love for your voice to join us. If you're interested in contributing, please contact me.
Here's to all the mammas out there.
